Tumbler cups make for great graduation gifts because they are long lasting, and when it comes to cups and graduation momentos, we just can’t get enough of them.
You can make put this design on almost any tumbler cup, but finding one with a even side surface on top is going to be the easiest when it comes to applying your vinyl, so keep this in mind when you select a blank to work with.
Okay, let’s get this project started!
LET’S MAKE A DIY GRADUATION TUMBLER CUP WITH CRICUT
Okay, so the first thing I want to tell you about tumbler cup crafts is that because they have a round surface, you will need to find the “font / face” of the cup to find out where you want to place your design.
Before we even begin with the steps to put a design on the cup, you should find the spot where you want to place your design and get the height and width measurements that you want your design to be.
STEP 1
The first thing you want to do is to wipe your tumbler cup with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, then let it dry.
You basically want to remove any fingerprints and debris that might be on the cup which would prevent the vinyl from sticking to it.
Once you’ve done this, another thing you want to do is to download the FREE The Tassel Was Worth The Hassle SVG File from the bottom of this post and upload it to Cricut Design Space.
You can then size it according to the measurements you came up with earlier.
STEP 2
Now let’s cut the design out.
Since this design comes in two colors, you’ll want to have the two colors of vinyl available so that you can insert both mats to your Cricut and get all the elements needed for the cup.
You need to be using permanent vinyl, or Oracal 651 for this project, as these vinyl’s will last the longest.
Once you’ve cut the design out, then weed it and layer it to create the design that we’re going to press on the tumbler using transfer tape.
You will want to layer the design piece by piece. Take your time to make sure it’s done right.
My best tip is to get the biggest piece of the design first onto the transfer tape, and so forth, until you’ve picked up all the pieces.
STEP 3
Now it’s we apply the design to the tumbler.
To make sure that you don’t get any air bubbles when you apply it to the cup, I would encourage you to start from the middle part of the design.
Then you can press outward towards the top and then the bottom. You can use a scraper tool or your fingers to varnish the design to the the cup.
Now your tumbler cup is done!
TIPS FOR WORKING WITH VINYL & TUMBLERS
1. Always clean your tumbler cups with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol before putting any vinyl on them, and let them dry completely.
Cups can become dirty with dust, finger prints, and all kinds of debris. This will make it so that your vinyl does not stick very well to it.
By cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and letting it dry before applying vinyl you will be giving it the best shot at having the design that you put on it lasting a long time.
2. Let your tumbler cure for at least 24-72 hours before using it or washing it.
A lot of people don’t know that you have to do this after applying vinyl to almost any surface, but it’s a “must do” in my book.
To let it cure, this means that you will just set the cup aside and let it rest with the vinyl on for a day or a few days after you’ve applied the vinyl.
This will help it adhere permanently.
3. Only hand wash your tumbler cups to avoid the vinyl lifting.
Sure, permanent vinyl is waterproof, however running it in a dishwasher where it will be wet for a long time is not ideal and it’s only natural that the stickiness of the vinyl would start to wear off after a time or two in there.
The best advice I have is to use mild soap and cool water to wash cups that you apply vinyl too.
Followed by hand drying them immediately after instead of letting them air dry.
