The amazing thing about cake toppers is that they come together very quickly and they don’t require a lot of materials.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS GRADUATION CAKE TOPPER
1. You will need some wooden skewer sticks. These are used to hold up the cake topper and to help you place it into the cake.
2. Two sheets of cardstock to be able to use for the back and front pieces of the topper. I suggest Black for the backing and a shiny color for the wording.
3. Crafting glue or foam adhesive squares. The glue will be used to stick the “Congrats Grad” letters to the back part of the topper. You can also use foam adhesive squares for this purpose, which will give it more of a 3D look.
4. Your Cricut cutting machine with Design Space readily available.

LET’S MAKE A DIY GRADUATION CAKE TOPPER WITH CRICUT
First thing’s first, you’ll want to find the right measurement for your cake topper.
You can do this by looking at the top layer of your cake and figuring out the width of the circle.
You definitely don’t want the topper to go over the sides, so pick something smaller than the width number and write it down.
STEP 1
Now we’re ready to begin!
Go ahead and upload the FREE Graduation Cake Topper Svg File to Design Space.
Then you will need to group the elements and size them according to the measurements you’d like it to be when all is said and done.
STEP 2
Let’s cut it now.
Since you’re working with cardstock, you’ll want to make sure that your machine dial is set to cardstock if you have the Cricut Explore family of machines, and if you’re working with the Maker or Joy, you’ll just want to select cardstock in your material settings.
If your material is thicker than regular cardstock, select a more appropriate material from the options that Cricut gives you.
Now you can send it to cut and then remove all the excess paper and dispose of it, leaving just our topper pieces.
STEP 3
The wonderful thing about this graduation cake topper project is that it is very easy to assemble.
I recommend that you have the photo of the design in front of you to help you line things up as they should be.
Using your glue or foam adhesive squares, begin placing the wording onto the backing.
Once it’s all in place, take your hot glue gun and attach two skewer sticks to the back of the topper to finish it up.
Ensure that the sticks are placed evenly spread apart, as well as level in length.
And there you have it. You just made your first cake topper!
TIPS FOR CAKE TOPPER CRAFT PROJECTS
1. Use heavy cardstock, but not too heavy, especially if your topper has a lot of layers.
I suggest 60 to 80 pound cardstock sheets.
My favorite places to shop for individual sheets is Michaels and Joann.
They both have a pretty big selection, and this way you don’t have to buy packs of paper for just one cake topper.
2. Make sure not to pick glitter cardstock that sheds glitter or it will end up in your cake.
This is super important, and the best way to check that your glitter cardstock does not shed glitter is to place it directly to your skin or a light colored shirt. This will allow you to see if it does right way.
3. Use a glue gun to attach the sticks to your topper.
You can use any glue to attach your sticks to the back of the cake topper, but if you want to make sure that they don’t go anywhere, and that the topper will remain in tack even after the celebration is over, then hot glue is what I would go with.
