Graduation mugs make for great gifts around the graduation season because they are easy to fill with candy or a small gift for the graduate.
It’s one of those gifts that everyone loves to receive, because you can never have too many mugs in your home.
Mugs like this one would be considered a momento and would probably be kept for many years after.
This also means that you want to make sure you make this graduation mug right, and so I’m going to walk you through a quick tutorial to help you do just that.
Let’s get started!
LET’S MAKE A DIY GRADUATION MUG WITH CRICUT
Okay, so the first thing I want to tell you about mug crafts is that because they have a round base, you will need to measure around and find the front face where you want to place your project.
Before we even begin with the steps to put a design on the mug, you should find the spot where you want to place your design and get the height and width measurements.
STEP 1
The first thing you want to do is to wipe your mug with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, then let it dry.
Doing this will remove any fingerprints and debris that might be on it which would prevent the vinyl from sticking to it in the long term.
Once you’ve done this, the other first step you want to take is to download the FREE Finally Done Graduation SVG File from the bottom of this post and upload it to Cricut Design Space.
You can then size it according to the measurements you collected earlier.
STEP 2
Now you’re ready to cut.
Since this design comes in two colors, you’ll want to have the two colors of vinyl available so that you can insert both mats to your Cricut and get all the elements needed for the mug.
Then weed them and layer them to create the design that we’re going to press on the mug using transfer tape. You will want to layer the design piece by piece.
Ideally you will start with the biggest piece of the designs first, and so forth, until you’ve picked up all the pieces.
STEP 3
Now it’s time to put the design on the mug.
To ensure that you don’t get any air bubbles when you go to lay the design down, I would encourage you to start from the middle part of the design.
Once you’ve got the center part of the design pressed, then press the top and bottom down and then the sides.
Now your mug is complete!
TIPS FOR WORKING WITH VINYL & MUGS
1. Always clean your mug with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol before putting any vinyl on it.
Mugs can become dirty with dust, finger prints, and all kinds of debris. This will make it so that your vinyl does not stick very well to it.
By cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and letting it dry before applying vinyl you will be giving it the best shot at having the design that you put on it lasting a long time.
2. Let your mug cure for at least 24-72 hours before using it or washing it.
A lot of people don’t know that you have to do this after applying vinyl to a mug, but it’s a “must do” in my book.
To let it cure, this means that you will just set the mug aside and let it rest with the vinyl on for a day or a few days after you’ve applied the vinyl.
This will help it adhere permanently.
3. Only hand wash your mugs to avoid the vinyl lifting.
Sure, permanent vinyl is waterproof, however running it in a dishwasher where it will be wet for a long time is not ideal and it’s only natural that the stickiness of the vinyl would start to wear off after a time or two in there.
The best advice I have is to use mild soap and cool water to wash mugs that you apply vinyl too. Followed by hand drying them immediately after instead of letting them air dry.
