Today’s freebie will actually be two different freebies. I am sharing with you the solid color design that you see in the first photo above, and I am also sharing a “distressed” one.

Here’s What You Need To Make This Merry Christmas Shirt

1. A Blank Shirt. You can use any color of shirt for this project, but I prefer colored ones because the design stands out so much.

2. 1 Sheet of Iron-On Vinyl in White. Iron On Vinyl is also known as HTV or Heat Transfer Vinyl.

3. A Heat Source to press this design. A Heat Press, the Cricut Easy Press, or just your household iron will do as well.

4. Your Cricut cutting machine with Design Space readily available.

5. This FREE Merry Christmas SVG File which you can download at the bottom of this post.

Let’s Make A Christmas Shirt!

Before we get started with cutting this design out and making the shirt, you will need to find out what size your design should be. We need the height and width measurements in inches.

To do this you can use a measuring tape, or your even just your Cricut cutting mat to figure this out.

TIP: I like to hover my mat over my shirts, and then count how many squares wide and tall I want my design to be.

STEP 1

Let’s get started!

Go ahead and upload the FREE Merry Christmas SVG File to Design Space.

Then you will need to size it according to the measurements you’d like it to be when all is said and done.

IF you want to cut this design in multiple colors you will need to duplicate the design a few times and use the “Contour” option to separate the design into layers.

Otherwise the design is set up to be cut out all at once, in one single layer and color of iron-on and with the placement already done for you.

STEP 2

Let’s cut it now.

Since you’re working with iron-on material you will need to make sure to hit the “mirror it” button which is available to you after you hit “Make It” in Design Space.

Now we can select our iron-on material from the list and send it to cut.

Once it’s finished, you can weed it out by pulling off all the negative material from the iron on sheet and disposing of it.

STEP 3

And now we can press it and finish up our shirt!

Using your heat source, you’ll want to give the shirt a good press to remove any wrinkles and moisture that may be on it.

Then you’ll need to find the center and place your design down and press it.

Make sure to always press with the “carrier sheet” face up. If you mirrored your design, you’ll be able to see it the right way it’s suppose to be.

How To Make Distressed Looking Shirts

I’m not sure how it happened, but distressed textures have become super popular in the design world. People love the way shirts look when they’re finished.

If you’re wondering how I created this distressed SVG file, it’s actually pretty simple. I just used my Distress / Grunge Textures Kit that you can purchase on DesignBundles.net and then I just “Slice” the pattern away from my design.

I know this sounds a little bit complicated, but I promise you it’s not, you can do this!

Here’s A Tip: If you’ve never used a distressed design before. Try to not use glitter or other premium types of iron-on vinyl.

The best vinyl for grunge designs is Siser Easyweed Heat Transfer Vinyl which I like to order from one of my favorite vinyl shops, Expressions Vinyl.

The reason that Siser Easyweed brand works better is that the vinyl by nature weeds easy and because it’s so thin, you won’t have any trouble pulling out the tiny specs of vinyl. Trust me on this!

Tips To Help You Make Shirts With Your Cricut

1. Make Sure Your Design Is Centered On Your Shirt. To do this is very simple. Just fold your shirt half way, lengthwise and give it a good press. This will give you a line that you can center your design on.

As a good rule of thumb, leave about 3-4 fingers worth of room from the collar down to make sure your design is displayed at about the right place vertically on the shirt.

And 2-3 fingers down worth of room for children’s shirts.

2. Flip Your Shirt And Press It From The Inside To Make The Iron-On Last Longer. They say that you should always see the fabric lines when you press iron-on vinyl. This would mean that your iron-on really stuck onto the shirt and it will last a long time without pealing up.

To do this, you can flip your shirt inside out and give it a final press from the back for a few seconds at the same temperature.

3. Use Stretch Iron-On Vinyl When Possible. This is not a tip that a lot of people know about, but it’s SO GOOD! If you’re never worked with stretch iron-on, you’re missing out.

This is my favorite kind of vinyl I like to use when I know that women will be wearing the shirts I make because it allows for the vinyl to stretch in the chest area without distorting it. I hope you know what I mean, but I believe if you’ve made shirts in the past, this tip will make total sense.

There usually isn’t a noticeable price difference in regular iron-on vinyl and stretch, so that’s a huge plus.

4. Pick Good Quality Shirts. For me this does not mean spending a lot of money on blank shirts; instead it means picking shirts that I will enjoy wearing. Some shirts can be so rough on your skin, or not have enough stretch, and that’s what I would call a bad quality shirt.

My favorite shirts to use for adults are from the brand Bella+Canvas, and I like to buy them either online at Jiffy Shirts or at Michaels.

I Made Christmas Shirts For My Girls!

FREE Merry Christmas Shirt SVG File For Cricut

So I went to Target and found these super cute, glitter speckled, solid red shirts and knew I wanted to make some shirts for my girls to wear on Christmas Day.

When I say that this design is super easy to work with, I mean it. It only took me about 20 minutes to make both shirts, from start to finish!

The Cricut Easy Press Works Great For Quick Shirts

I always get asked what heat press I use when I make shirts, and the truth is that I have 2 presses.

I have the Cricut EasyPress and this Power Press Clamshell Heat Press (I bought it on Amazon).

They both serve their own purpose, but if you asked me which one you should get I would suggest that you get the Cricut EasyPress if you’re mostly a hobby crafter; meaning you mostly make shirts for yourself.

But if you plan on making shirts in bulk or perhaps starting your own little craft business, then I would suggest that you get an industrial quality heat press like my Power Press. The price difference and quality of the press really is just much better with a clamshell press.

As far as making quick shirts with my Cricut, I almost always use my Cricut Easy Press 2 because I don’t have to wait long for it to heat up.

QUICK NOTE

You can use these designs for personal and commercial use. If you’d like to share them with your friends (I’d LOVE THIS!), I do ask that you just link them to this post and help support my website. Also, please don’t upload it to a print on demand (POD) website, or send it for mass production.

I have a quick favor to ask. Before you download this freebie, please JOIN the Facebook Group (CLICK HERE), and if you can, please PIN one of the images above.

Thank you so much for your support, and if you make anything with this design, tag me @PerfectStylishCuts, I love seeing your makes.
