Not only is this a project that you can complete in less than an hour, but because you’re working with a semi-large surface, it’s very beginner friendly since there’s no tiny pieces of vinyl to weed.
Let’s get started making this door hanger!
What Do I Need To Make This Merry Christmas Door Hanger?
Here are all the things I used to make this FREE Merry Christmas Door Hanger.
- A Blank Wood Round (I always order mine from Amazon, but you can purchase these at Lowes, Home Depot and even at the Dollar Tree!)
- 2 Sheets of Permanent Vinyl (You will need Red and Green Vinyl for this project.)
- Transfer Tape (This is my favorite go-to transfer tape.)
- White Chalk Paint & A Foam Brush (I love to use the Rustoleum brand of chalk paint.)
- Your Cricut Cutting Machine With Design Space Readily Available

Before you begin cutting your design, you’ll want to make sure to measure just how wide and tall you’ll want it to be on the wood round.
To measure I like to use a measuring tape to figure out how many inches tall and wide my design should be exactly.
Make sure you leave a little bit of room on each side of the design to make sure it looks nice.
Let’s Make A Christmas Door Hanger With Cricut!
STEP 1: Paint Your Wood Round White And Let It Fully Dry. This step is SO important, so please don’t skip it.
The last thing you want is to apply vinyl and have the pain pull up with the transfer tape.
STEP 2: Upload the FREE Merry Christmas Door Hanger SVG File to Design Space and size it according to the measurement you want it to be.
Remember to make sure the little lock icon is closed when you go to size your design to make sure it doesn’t get distorted and retains the correct size proportions.
What I like to do for door hangers is to place a circle shape in my Design Space Canvas, the same size as the round I’m using, and then align my design within that circle shape to get a good sense of how big it will be once I go to apply it.
STEP 3: Cut, Weed & Apply Transfer Tape To Your Design.
Since you’re working with vinyl, you do not need to worry about mirroring your design. Just let it cut as is. Once you’ve cut the design, weed it.
This means that you will need to remove all of the excess vinyl from your vinyl sheet, leaving just the design itself on the paper.
Since you’ll be cutting this design in multiple colors of vinyl, you’ll end up with two different pieces of paper with designs on it.
After you’ve weeded the design elements, cut a piece of transfer tape as big as your entire design and apply it to the green laurel leaves, and then add in the “Merry Christmas” wording.
I suggest using a scraper tool to secure the vinyl to the transfer tape without leaving any air bubbles.
Lastly, if possible, trim a nice circle around your design to help you when you go to apply it.
STEP 4: Align & Apply Design.
This is where you will benefit from having created the circle shape with your design in it within Design Space.
If you did this, then you can easily see where your design needs to be applied to make sure that its placement is even and pleasing to the eye.
If you did not do this, and want to ensure that your design is aligned properly on your Merry Christmas Door Hanger Sign, it’s not too late to go back and do that step.
It’s just a good visual aid to help you out.
Once you know exactly where to place your design, apply it by pressing it from the top to the bottom.
And that’s it!
You’ve made a beautiful Christmas Door Hanger that you can keep for yourself, sell at a craft fair, or gift to someone you love.
You can use this design for Personal and Commercial Use. If you’d like to share it with your friends (I’d LOVE THIS!), I do ask that you just link them to this post and help support my website. Also, please don’t upload it to a print on demand (POD) website, or send it for mass production.
