Decorating doormats is actually a very easy process if you’ve never done it before. There are only a few materials that you will need to have.

The first is a blank coir doormat. You can purchase these doormat blanks at Ikea for a really great price usually and they offer them in two sizes. In a pinch, if you don’t have an Ikea near you, you can also find them in the gardening section of Target.

The next thing that you will need is some stencil vinyl. If you’re looking for a recommendation, I love to use Oramask 813 stencil vinyl for all my vinyl projects.

Once you have those two things, the other supplies are ones that you may already have such as acrylic outdoor paint and sponge brushes. For this project, I like to use the circular sponge brushes because I feel like I can get a better press of the paint without having to use too much.

Now that you have all your materials together, you just need to download the free Hello Sunshine SVG file at the bottom of this post, size it according to the size of mat that you’re using and cut it out.

You’re going to need to use transfer paper to put it onto your mat, so my best advice here is to not use a high grip transfer tape. You want the stencil vinyl to release as easily as possible.

And now you’re ready to paint! Take your time and remember to let it air dry for at least 24-48 hours to make sure that it the paint is set.

P.S. If you’re wondering if you should seal your doormats to make them last longer, the answer is YES! I like to use a water proof spray sealer like this Krylon one.
