The first day of school for us is in less than 2 weeks! I am so excited for my girls to get back to learning and possibly even having some socialization with old and new friends, even if it’s just on Zoom.
This school year is going to look a little bit different for everyone though, and I get it. That’s why today I decided to share with you a FREE first day of school SVG file that you can use in many ways!

Isn’t this just the cutest sign design ever?! I think so!
It’s also really easy to use, and I welded it all together for you. That means that all that you will need to make this is one sheet of vinyl. It will all cut out at once and you won’t need to do any of the placement or aligning to put it together … isn’t that awesome? Again, I think so ;).
Okay, so let’s start the quick tutorial. I’m going to walk you through exactly how I would put together a cute chalkboard like the one pictured, if you so choose.
P.S. You can use this design as you please. You don’t need to make it into a chalkboard like mine. This design would easily work on a canvas, on a glass frame that you paint with chalk paint, and even just on a paper that the kids can color!
How To Make A First Day Of School Chalkboard Sign
If you want to go all out and make the chalkboard sign that is in the photo above, here’s how you do it.
YOU’RE GOING TO NEED
– 1 Sheet Of White Vinyl (Removable or Adhesive will do.)
– Transfer Tape (Checkout my fave!)
– The FREE First Day Of School Chalkboard Sign SVG File that you can download at the bottom of this post.
LET’S GET STARTED!
The first step is to download your free cut file and upload it to Design Space. I recommend that you download the SVG file specifically because that one is easiest to work with in Design Space.
Your next step will be to size your board area and adjust the cut file design in your software before sending it to cut. Since you’re going to be placing the vinyl on top of the chalkboard, there is no need to mirror your image.
Now that you’ve cut it, it’s time to weed it. Make sure to only weed the negative parts of your design, leaving the design in tact to be transferred to the chalkboard.
To transfer the design is very simple. Simply cut a piece of transfer tape and place it sticky side down onto your design. Then use a card or burnishing tool to smooth it out and then you can pull off the paper that formerly held the vinyl.
In order to make sure that your design is centered on the board I recommend that you slightly bend the design in half and use that as your center point. If you have a lot of vinyl sticking out of the sides of the design, you can use your scissors to trim it.
Now you’re ready to place the design on the board. You will need your burnishing tool or card to smooth it on and once you’re sure that it’s stuck, pull off the tape from the top corner slowly until you’re left with the finished sign.
Woohoo, you did it. Now take your chalk markers and fill in the information or even better let your little ones do it. Now it’s picture time!!!
QUICK NOTE: You can use this design for personal and commercial use. If you’d like to share it with your friends (I’d LOVE THIS!), I do ask that you just link them to this post and help support my website. Also, please don’t upload it to a print on demand (POD) website, or send it for mass production.
Thank you so much for your support, and if you make anything with this design, tag me @PerfectStylishCuts, I love seeing your makes.
