Making a beautiful memorial lantern will take you no time at all. It may look like it’s a complicated craft, but it’s very beginner friendly.
Let’s get started!
What Do I Need To Make This Christmas Memorial Lantern?
Here are all the things I used to make this FREE Christmas Memorial Lantern.
- A Lantern With Clear Windows (I got mine on Amazon, they have lots of beautiful choices.)
- 1 Sheet of Permanent Vinyl (I used black vinyl, but feel free to use any color you’d like.)
- Transfer Tape (This is my favorite go-to transfer tape.)
- Alcohol Wipes (You can use a cotton ball and some rubbing alcohol if you don’t have wipes. I bought this huge box of Alcohol Wipes on Amazon for all my vinyl projects.)
- Your Cricut Cutting Machine With Design Space Readily Available

Before you begin cutting your design, you’ll want to make sure to measure just how wide and tall you’ll want it to be on the lantern.
To measure I like to use a measuring tape to figure out how many inches tall and wide my design should be exactly.
Make sure you leave a little bit of room on each side of the design to make sure it looks nice.
Let’s Make A Christmas Memorial Lantern With Cricut!
STEP 1: Wipe Your Lantern With Alcohol To Prepare It For Vinyl. This step is SO important, so please don’t skip it.
In order to remove any debris that might be on the surface of the glass windows of your Lantern or oils from handling it, you need to rub the entire surface with alcohol and let it dry.
I always do this first, because it will dry as I’m cutting and weeding my design.
STEP 2: Upload the FREE Christmas Memorial Lantern SVG File to Design Space and size it according to the measurement you want it to be.
Remember to make sure the little lock icon is closed when you go to size your design to make sure it doesn’t get distorted and retains the correct size proportions.
What I like to do for ornaments is to place a rectangle shape in my Design Space Canvas, the same size as the window on my lantern, and then align my design within that rectangle shape to get a good sense of how big it will be once I go to apply it.
STEP 3: Cut, Weed & Apply Transfer Tape To Your Design.
Since you’re working with vinyl, you do not need to worry about mirroring your design. Just let it cut as is. Once you’ve cut the design, weed it.
This means that you will need to remove all of the excess vinyl from your vinyl sheet, leaving just the design itself on the paper.
Since you’ll be cutting this design in a single color of vinyl, I suggest that you select your entire design, minus the rectangle shape, and “Weld” it all before you cut.
This will make it so that it cuts out ready to place on your lantern, no aligning necessary.
After you’ve weeded the design, cut a piece of transfer tape as big as your entire design and apply it to it.
I suggest using a scraper tool to secure the vinyl to the transfer tape without leaving any air bubbles.
Lastly, if possible, trim a nice rectangle around your design to help you when you go to apply it.
STEP 4: Align & Apply Design.
This is where you will benefit from having created the rectangle shape with your design in it within Design Space.
If you did this, then you can easily see where your design needs to be applied to make sure that its placement is even and pleasing to the eye.
If you did not do this, and want to ensure that your design is aligned properly on your Christmas memorial lantern, it’s not too late to go back and do that step.
It’s just a good visual aid to help you out.
Once you know exactly where to place your design, apply it by pressing it from the top to the bottom.
And that’s it!
You’ve made a lovely Christmas Memorial Lantern that you can keep for yourself to remember a loved one, or gift to a friend or family member.
