If you’ve been seeing these toilet paper gag gifts come up in your social feed, that should tell you something. People love these and they are very popular sellers!
If you’re doing a Christmas event or craft show, and you’re looking for a low price item that is easy to make and will turn a profit, these toilet paper crafts are it.
I’m also seeing A LOT of questions come up about how to make them, and what all is needed. This post will answer all of the questions that you have in a Q&A style.

Let’s get started. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave them in the comments, and let’s help each other out with tips and tricks.
Q: What kind of vinyl do you use for these?
A: I personally use Iron-On Vinyl because I like the look of it and I don’t have to worry that the vinyl will come off or get damaged since it’s on the inside of the bag. You can however use permanent vinyl if you’d like. You just wouldn’t put the vinyl directly on the toilet paper roll. You’d want to place it on the cellophane bag once you’ve put the toilet paper inside and wrapped it up. This will help you with placement for the vinyl so it’s still centered on the toilet paper roll.
Q: What size should I cut the design at?
A: I think this depends on the toilet paper roll itself. Some rolls are bigger than others, but a good rule of thumb would be to size under 4 inches tall by 4 inches wide. An easy tip to get a measurement for the rolls you’re using is to hold up a cutting mat to the toilet paper roll and see what looks good to you. I use this tip a lot!
Q: How do you press the iron-on vinyl onto the toilet paper?
A: I use my heat press to make these. I find this is the best and easiest way to get them done. I set my heat press at 315 degrees and this tends to work great with both glitter and regular heat transfer vinyl. I have a teflon sheet that I hold with magnets to the top part of my press (the heat lid), and I roll the toilet paper back and forth on it for 5-10 seconds before pulling off the transfer tape, hot peel.
Q: Where do you get the bags for the toilet paper rolls?
A: I get my bags at the Dollar Tree. They are called “Candy Loot Bags” and you can find them in the party section or you can order them online. They come in a pack of 25 and for a $1 you can’t beat this price. I’ve heard of people using Walmart bread bags, however I believe these run pretty big and will do better if you want to wrap two rolls at once.
Q: What should I price these at?
A: I’ve seen a lot of different price points, and the truth is that this is something that can differ depending on how much material and time you put into the project. Personally I think they do great at $5 a piece if you’re using permanent vinyl and $8 a piece if you’re using iron-on vinyl. You should also consider what brand and quality of toilet paper you’re using, and how it’s being presented and wrapped. Are you using pretty ribbon? That costs a little bit more too; so make sure to factor it into your pricing. I would also think about selling them in bundles at a lower price to help your customers order more. For example, you can do 1 for $8 or 2 for $15.

Q: Shipping these could be very expensive due to the size, where else can I sell these?
A: I totally hear ya’ on this one. I think these sell best at craft fairs, local “for sale” groups, neighborhood groups, sporting events, etc. Somewhere local is best, where you can display them easily either on a table in your booth or by sharing photos and taking orders for pickup or local delivery. Also, let your friends and family know that you’re selling these as they can help you spread the word to others. You may even try gifting one or two to someone who is really active on social media and can help you share them even further.
Q: How do I advertise these to customers? Why would someone buy toilet paper?
A: This is a great questions! I always tell people that these would make great gag gifts, white elephant gifts, gift card companions, teenager gifts, and my favorite use for them is bathroom decor. Yes, that’s right decor! People have been decorating toilet paper rolls for a long time. I can remember my grandmother-in-law having rolls of embroidered toilet paper that said random things in her bathroom above the toilet. It’s a fun item to have in your bathroom whenever guests come over. It’s a conversation starter for sure. When promoting these, it’s best to show photos of them already created, and the more the merrier. It makes people think these are a hot item and they need to buy one or a few.
Q: Do I have to wrap them? Why can’t I just sell the rolls by themselves?
A: You can definitely sell the rolls by themselves, but people like to see these wrapped up and tied with a bow of some sort. They want to think that they’re buying a finished and more importantly a wrapped item that is easy to gift or display. It really isn’t hard or expensive to add the wrapping to these. Again I use Dollar Tree loot bags, and you can almost always find holiday themed ribbon in the deal bins at Michaels for a dollar or less.
Alright, well that’s all I have for today, I hope that you will try these out for yourself and see how popular they are. They make for lots of laughs and people will love sharing them with friends and family.
